O u r   e v e n t s . . .

Currently we are scheduled to meet once every 3 months (quarterly) on the second saturday of each quarter for our quarterly luncheon and betta meeting. Non members are welcome to attend a meeting, click here for more details. For vital meeting info please see the "meeting important must read" section of this page. Do not come to a meeting unless you have read this entire page and have a good understanding of what to expect from the meeting, and what we expect from you. :).

next meeting date:

saturday 07/08/06 11AM

lecture topic:

how to deal with
a bacterial outbreak
in your fishroom

Meeting schedule

u 11AM - meeting participants arrive and LABS member get their raffle tickets. Each participant signs up on the meeting log sheet and places a food plate for the potluck on the potluck table. Bring your own drinks!

u 11:30 AM - Meeting starts promptly at 11:30AM with our half hour lecture followed by a 30 min 'question and answer' session (all and any questions welcome).

u 12:30 PM - Luncheon! Enjoy our potluck in company of great new betta friends :). This is a time for great food, meeting new friends, mingling and relaxing. Please note that each person attending the meeting, whether member or non member, must participate in the luncheon by bringing one food item (NO exceptions) and the potluck is open to all. Bring your own drinks! No alcoholic beverages please.

u 1:30 PM - Following the great food and mingling, we will have our free betta raffle and betta trade. Your sick bettas (if you have one) will be looked at and diagnosed by our top experts. Last but not least, any betta you wish to bring will be evaluated and we will point out to you the qualities and flaws of your current spawns/lines. This is very valuable information/help that may save you months (possibly years) of work. :) So take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and do bring bettas for us to look at!

u 2:00 PM - We expect the meeting to be officially over around 2PM or so, although you are certainly welcome to hang out longer if you so desire. The park is lovely and there is a lot to do there.

Meeting important must reads

u In case of rain the meeting will be cancelled and rescheduled for the 1st saturday of the following month. All members will be notified via email. The new meeting date will also be posted at the top of this page.

u Guests and non-members are welcome to join us but there are some stipulations you must read first.

u Each person attending the meeting, whether member or non member, must participate in the luncheon by bringing one food  item to share (NO exceptions) and the potluck is open to all.

u Each meeting attendee brings his own drinks. In short: You bring a food plate to share with everyone but as far as drinks go, it is each man to himself :). Meetings take place at a public park - no alcoholic beverages will be allowed.

u Paper plates, cups, napkins and plastic forks will be provided by LABS.

u Bring your own folding chairs! A MUST. Otherwise you will have to sit on the ground which may be wet. (sprinklers).

u Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash (park rules, not mine hehe). You will want to keep them away from our food table too!

u Yes, nice bathrooms are available at the park.

u No, to date I have not been able to locate a single water fountain at this park. So don't forget to bring something to drink!

u There is a Trader Joe's right on the corner of Hazeltine and Riverside, one block from the park. They have many food items and drinks there, so if you forgot to bring a potluck item, you can go get one pronto!

u Don't be late! We will not wait for you.

u Attendance varies greatly from meeting to meeting. We could have as little as 4 people or as many as fifty (or more?). Smaller meetings have the advantage of allowing you to get more personal attention and to ask more questions.

u BRING BETTAS to be looked at, admired, evaluated, diagnosed etc. All bettas welcome, yes even pet store ones! :) we love them all.

u You may not sell supplies or bettas at our meetings. You are however welcome to bring anything betta to give away or trade. Please label each item with either "FREE" or "TRADE" to avoid confusion. If it is a trade item also put a label with your name on it. Look for our trade table and place your items there.

u if you leave the meeting before the raffle, you forfeit your raffle ticket.

Meeting location

Currently our LABS meetings take place at the Sherman Oaks Van Nuys park located on the North West corner of Hazeltine avenue and Huston street, in Sherman Oaks, approximately 5 min drive from the 405 and 101 freeway interchange. This is a convenient location, easy to access for everyone.

Quick directions: From the 101 freeway Exit on VAN NUYS. Head North on Van Nuys and turn immediately RIGHT on RIVERSIDE. Go up one block and turn LEFT on HAZELTINE. the park will be on your left hand side at the very next intersection (HUDSON). Turn LEFT on HUDSON and turn right into the parking lot. Please see maps below to locate our approximate location within the park (cause it is a fairly large park).

Please do NOT try to map quest this park as you will get too many search results and will end up confused and will more than likely get lost :). Instead, I have prepared for you these fine maps below (click on a map to see details and to print it):

MEETING MAP 1.jpg (388009 bytes) this map shows you where the park is, in context with the West side, Burbank and West Hollywood.
MEETING MAP 2.jpg (328060 bytes) this map shows you how to get to the park from the 405 and 101 interchange.
MEETING MAP 3.jpg (70163 bytes) this is a close up map of the park and its side streets
MEETING MAP 4.jpg (214573 bytes) this satellite image shows you the South East corner of the park, on the corner of Hazeltine avenue and Huston street. You can see the tree line and the parking lot. I have marked the parking lot with he blue arrow. Park here if you can. Somewhere inside the red circle is the location of our meeting. Just look for us, there will be a LABS sign on a post. Depending on how busy the park is, we might be at a park table or have our own portable table set-up.  There might be only a few of us there or as many as fifty people, so look for the LABS sign!
